Why a Hands-Off Test Works

When you are using your phone, it's hard to tell a phantom tap from a mis-tap. A hands-off test removes the doubt: if nobody is touching the screen, every touch it reports is a ghost touch.

The monitor listens across the whole page, not just the test area, so phantom touches on the header or below the canvas are counted too. Only the touches that land inside the test area can be drawn as red dots.

Mouse and trackpad clicks are never counted, because ghost touches only come from a touchscreen. On a touchscreen laptop, run the test with your hands off both the screen and the trackpad.

How to Run the Test

  1. Extend the screen timeout: Set your display to stay on for at least a minute so the screen doesn't lock mid-test.
  2. Lay the device flat: Put it on a dry, non-metal surface such as a wooden table. Don't hold it, because your hand changes the electrical field around the screen.
  3. Press Start and step back: You have 3 seconds before monitoring begins. The test runs for 30 seconds.
  4. Run it twice, on and off the charger: One run on battery and one plugged into your usual charger tells you whether the charger is the source.
  5. Repeat without the case and screen protector: If the count drops to zero, the accessory was the problem, not the screen.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ghost Touch

What is ghost touch?

Ghost touch is when a touchscreen registers taps, swipes, or typing that nobody made. It can open apps, scroll pages, or type random characters on its own. The cause is the touch sensor detecting a change in capacitance that didn't come from a finger.

How does the ghost touch test work?

Press Start and take your hands off the screen. After a 3-second countdown, the test counts every touch your screen reports for 30 seconds, anywhere on the page. Touches inside the test area are marked with red dots so you can see if they cluster in one spot.

Why did the test find no ghost touches when my phone has the problem?

Ghost touch is often intermittent. It may only happen while charging, when the phone is warm, or in humid conditions. Run the test several times under the conditions where you normally see the problem, especially while plugged into the charger you usually use.

Can a charger cause ghost touch?

Yes. Cheap or damaged chargers can leak electrical noise into the phone's ground, which the touch sensor reads as fingers. If the test finds phantom touches only while charging, try a different charger and cable before paying for a screen repair.

Can a screen protector cause ghost touch?

Yes. A protector with trapped moisture, dust, or a lifting edge can create false contact points, usually near the edges. If phantom touches cluster along one edge, remove the protector, clean the glass, and run the test again.

Why did my phone leave the page during the test?

A phantom touch near the screen edge can trigger a system gesture such as going home or switching apps. That is itself strong evidence of ghost touch. Note roughly where it happened and run the test again with the device lying flat.
